AP Exam

The AP English Literature and Composition course focuses on both the reading of literature and writing about it. The reading assignments cover a variety of genres and time periods and students should engage in the critical analysis of each text. The writing focuses on the experience, evaluation, and interpretation of the literature.

The AP English Literature and Composition Exam format is:

  • Multiple-Choice (60 minutes, 45% of final grade)

    • 55 multiple choice questions

  • AP English Free-Response (120 minutes, 55% of final grade)

    • 3 essay questions

The multiple choice questions are based on short passages that you read followed by a number of questions about the style, form, and content of the material. The free-response essay questions test your ability to analyze literary texts and write effective essays using clear prose.

ACT

The ACT consists of four multiple-choice “Subject Tests” covering English, Math, Reading, and Science Reasoning. There will also be a new “optional” writing section at the very end of the test. If you are collegebound, I highly suggest that you sign up for the optional writing section. These Subject Tests will always appear on the ACT in the order they were introduced above.

The school offers ACT tutoring with Mrs. Gardner (room 16-004) on Tuesdays and with Ms. Bass (room 16-005) on Thursdays. The times are 2:05 to 3:05. We focus on the Reading portion of the test.

SAT

Like other assessments in the SAT Suite of Assessments, the new SAT includes a Reading Test, Writing and Language Test, and a Math Test. The SAT has an optional essay component, which some colleges will require. SAT questions focus on skills that matter most for college readiness and success, according to the latest research.
